BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 22, 2009 – Cuba
recorded a 3-1 victory over Costa Rica in the
second match of Pool B of NORCECA Women’s
Continental Championship. The score was 25-14,
25-10, 22-25, 25-20.
Cubans Yusidey Silie and Kenia Carcaces each
compiled 17 points with Silie recording 4 blocks
and 3 aces. Wilma Salas contributed 15 and
Giselle Silva charted 11 tallies. Verania and
Angela Willis had 12 and 9 points respectively
for Costa Rica.
Cuba outscored its opponent 10-3 in blocks and
13-9 in aces but gave away 33 points with errors
against 20 by Costa Rica.
“I think our team was overconfident in the third
set when we made also some changes, and it
allowed Costa Rica to take the set,” said Luis
Oviedo, the Cuban coach. “It was more difficult
in the fourth set because Costa Rica was
inspired. We need to play much better tomorrow
against United States.”
“We never had won a set against Cuba, so this is
something historic and we are satisfied because
we have to recognize that Cuba and USA are in
another level in our Pool. Our objective is to
win tomorrow against Mexico.”
